PRT operates seven days a week from May 14 – August 1. The PRT day is divided into 3 sections: 9 a.m.–12 p.m.; 1 p.m. –5 p.m., and 7 p.m.-10 p.m. These hours change somewhat as the four productions are up and running. Company members are required to attend all sessions. Sessions are dedicated to rehearsal and technical work. Company members not in rehearsal will be working in their designated work area and vice versa. On Sundays, PRT does not begin work until 1:00 p.m. We also will take Wednesday mornings off to allow company members to see to personal matters.
Work Areas
All students participating in PRT are also assigned a work area. While most company members will work in more than one area throughout the summer, each student will have a primary work area. These areas include: scene shop, lights/sound, costumes, properties, and box and publicity offices. On your application form you will be asked to indicate which areas you would like to be your primary work areas.
Registering for Credits
All students participating in Prairie Repertory Theatre will need to register for credit in THEA 480. Students should not register for their credits until after the cast list has been posted.
The approximate cost of one credit is around $185 for in-state undergrads, $230 for out-of state undergrads, and $340 for graduate students. (These fees are subject to regental change or increases.) We have made arrangements for those fees to be deferred until after July 1. Students not seeking a degree at SDSU need to complete additional paperwork and will receive these forms via mail with their contracts. Student from other institutions may wish to make inquiries as to whether the summer credits will transfer to their home institutions.
As with any SDSU course, students must be in favorable academic standing in order to register for courses, and thus, participate in PRT. All students will be required to write a paper at the end of the season. The reaction paper will be due on the last day of PRT and should display how participation in the summer company has altered his or her perspective of theatre. Graduate students will be required to submit a portfolio of his or her work for the summer company. This portfolio is also due on the last day of PRT.
Pay
Company members can be paid through two methods: work-study or hourly wage. Students who are approved for work-study may earn a salary of up to $2500 for the summer. The amount of work-study awards is determined by your FAFSA. All students are encouraged to apply for work-study via the “web” and the SDSU financial aid office immediately if they have not already done so. The FAFSA website is: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. SDSU Federal School Code for the FAFSA is 003471. Students who are not eligible for work-study will earn a base salary of $2300.
Students will be paid for the first 40 hours of work completed each week. Work beyond those 40 hours is considered educational experience and is not paid. Thus, based on casting, some students will work more during the rehearsal portion of the summer (May and June) and others may work more during the performance portion of the summer (July). Everyone will receive their full allocation.
Housing
PRT does not provide housing for company members. Each member is responsible for their own housing. There numerous housing options for the summer, as many student renters will sublet at reduced rates. However, if you are new to the Brookings area or SDSU campus, the staff and company members will be happy to try and help you locate a place to live for the summer. There are also dorm spaces available for approximately $110/week.
